Destroy Any Website with the Bookmarklet
The bookmarklet turns the page you are already looking at into a playable level. It is the most reliable way to destroy any website, because it works on pages that URL mode can't fetch, such as sites behind a login or built entirely with JavaScript.
Drag this button to your bookmarks bar:
💥 Destroy WebsiteClicking it here does nothing. It has to be saved as a bookmark first.
Install it in 4 steps
- Show your bookmarks bar. Press Ctrl+Shift+B on Windows and Linux, or Cmd+Shift+B on a Mac.
- Drag the pink 💥 Destroy Website button above onto the bar.
- Open any website you want to wreck.
- Click the bookmark. The page rebuilds as a level and the game starts.
Browser notes
Chrome and Edge
Use the shortcut above to show the bar, then drag.
Firefox
Open the menu, choose Bookmarks, then Bookmarks toolbar, and pick Always show. Drag the button onto the toolbar.
Safari
Choose View, then Show Favorites Bar (or use the shortcut). Drag the button to the Favorites Bar. If dragging fails, use the manual method below.
Manual method: copy the code
If dragging does not work, create a bookmark by hand. Copy the code, add a new bookmark in your browser, name it "Destroy Website" and paste the code as the URL.
What happens when you click it
The bookmark loads a small script from this site into your current tab. The script reads the visible elements on the page, such as headings, text, images, buttons and links, and builds the game level on top of them. Nothing is sent back to the site you are on, and nothing on that site's server changes. Reload the page and everything is exactly as it was.
Why it doesn't work on some sites
Many large sites use a Content Security Policy (CSP), a security setting that tells the browser to refuse scripts from other domains. On those pages the browser blocks our script before it can run, and you will see an alert saying the site blocks outside scripts. It is not a bug, and it is a sign that the site is doing its job. In that case, paste the address into the box on the home page and play in URL mode instead.
Mobile limitations
Phone browsers make bookmarklets awkward. Most do not let you drag a link to a bookmarks bar, and some strip javascript: addresses from the address bar. If you are on mobile, use URL mode on the home page and play in touch mode. For the full bookmarklet experience, use a desktop browser.
Is it safe?
Yes. The bookmarklet runs only in the tab where you click it, only when you click it, and only affects what you see on your screen. It does not read your passwords, post anything or change the real website. Close or reload the tab to restore the page. As with any bookmarklet, only install code from sources you trust; the full code is shown above so you can read it yourself.
